The Department of International Relations and Diplomacy (DIRD) a prestigious academic institution located at the University Campus of Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal, is a significant academic institution within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Department of International Relations and Diplomacy (DIRD) established in 2013 as Master’s Program in International Relations and Diplomacy (MIRD) is the first academic institution in Nepal providing a degree on foreign affairs and stand out as one of the most sought-after academic programs in the country. Accordingly, MIRD was upgraded into the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy (DIRD) in 2019 and began offering PhD degree as well.

This upward trajectory of DIRD in such a brief period reflects the immense interest among Nepali students in pursuing the subject. And since its inception, the core focus of DIRD has been and remains to support the students by providing them academic knowledge in an appropriate academic setting which not just broadens their understanding of global affairs but also contributes to the foreign policy of Nepal by producing conscious and well-aware human resource in the field of international relations. In recent years, the Department has also been successful in drawing international students making our contribution truly global.

In this context, DIRD is entirely focused on imparting quality education and providing necessary resources for the academic advancement of the students, research and knowledge production in the field of international relations and diplomacy. A greater emphasis is placed on developing research capabilities and analytical skills among the students.

1.  Courses Offered:

  • Master of Arts (MA) in International Relations and Diplomacy
  • MPhil-PhD in International Relations and Diplomacy
  • PhD in International Relations Diplomacy by Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Office of the Dean

2. History and Recognition:

  • The department introduced its Master's program in International Relations and Diplomacy in the year 2013.
  • In 2018, it expanded to offer PhD courses.
  • It was recognized as a department by the Office of the Academic Council, Tribhuvan University in year 2019.
  • From 2021 onwards, the department offers an integrated MPhil-PhD program in International Relations.
  • This program allows the top 5 students to be selected for direct PhD admission upon meeting the required criteria and procedures.
